on the fiscal cliff. one of the big questions is, what will happen next? editor at large for fortune magazine, he joins us from new york right now. you have followed most of the major economic stories for more than 20 years now. >> i'm not trying to make you seem old. sometimes i do, when i say how long i've been doing this. is this the first time you've seen something go this close to the wire? >> i think so, don. and what's really troubling about the debate is really missed by a lot of commentators, this is really a spending issue. we understand that even if taxes go up on individuals making over 200,000 and families making over 250, it only plugs about 8% of the deficit problem over the next ten years, we have a $1.3 trillion deficit for 2012. it's going to be about a trillion through 2013. we're borrowing 35 cents on the dollar. the enormous problem is interest rates are way below normal, so when they spike, the government is borrowing very short term to keep its costs down. the deficit is going to swamp the economy. and at that point you're going to have the debt crisis, and you're going

, as jessica said, the oddsmakers are definitely seeing the fiscal cliff happening, us going over the fiscal cliff, but if senate does pass something, that would be the next move, then the house could pretty easily take it up and pass it on sunday night or monday morning, on the actual day of december 31st. i think at this point, it's more of a question of optics, and democrats were definitely trying to take advantage today of the fact that the house republican -- the republican-led house, rather, is not here and won't be here until sunday. we all know that what happens here in washington, is that nothing really happens until they're really up against the deadline. that's why i'm also told by some democrats who really know what the process is going to be, if there is one, that they don't even see this potentially happening, if there is any kind of legislation that goes before december 1331st, until probably that day, december 31st, because the pressure will have to be on to get enough republicans in the house and the senate, to pass this. >> right up to the edge. thank you, dana. thank you,

can't hide from the impending cliff of doom. despite what steve might tell you watching fiscal cliff nonsense in washington can make you feel powerless. our next guest is here with the tips on how to make -- take some of you power back. joining us is rick newman, chief business correspondent for "u.s. news & world report" and author of "rebounders." so tell us, what can the average person do to sort of thwart against the realities of the fiscal cliff? >> my first tip is just relax. it's not going to be armageddon right off the bat. i mean, it is worth pointing out we hear the humongous figures like $500 billion in tax increases and stuff like that. most of those will not affect people until it's time to fill out the tax returns and won't happen until 2014. say the tax rates go up, the government is not going to automatically withhold more money from the paycheck and the tax rates can be in effect for most of the year. we hope they're not but congress could rescind them toward the end of the year and one thing to affect you is the payroll tax cut, two percentage points and spoebed to

crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith propos
